Guidelines for Best Practices

January 20, 2016

The recent release of the Alberta Education document "Guidelines for Best Practices: Creating Learning Environments that Respect Diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities and Gender Expressions" has generated significant parent questions and concerns, and considerable media attention. Most of these parent questions relate to how are we as a school division are going to approach the implementation of these guidelines.

To help address some of these parent questions and concerns, please review this letter to parents.

Our schools have always been places where all students are welcomed and feel included. We successfully provided safe and caring environments, and are grounded and guided by our faith in how we strive to support all students.

We encourage you to please review these guidelines and share your opinions with your local MLA, Education Minister Eggen (Education.Minister@gov.ab.ca), and the premier’s office (premier@gov.ab.ca).

If you have any questions or concerns about what these "Guidelines" mean for any of our schools, please contact our Associate Superintendent of Faith Development and Division Support, Ryan Ledene or our Superintendent, Dr. V. Paul Mason at 403-343-1055.
