Celebrate Family Literacy Day with Red Deer Public Library this weekend

Mark your calendars – the Family Literacy Day Read for 15 Challenge is coming up on Friday, January 26 and Saturday, January 27!

This is always a fun and exciting literacy initiative and Red Deer Public Library LOVES having Red Deer schools involved.

Why participate in the Read for 15 Challenge?

While Red Deer Public Library is motivated by friendly competition between libraries across Canada to become the nation's most "readerly" community, the ultimate goal of the FLD Read for 15 Challenge is to bring awareness to literacy by promoting and encouraging reading, making all reading valid, and raising awareness about the value of reading.

Red Deer Public Library encourages each school to come up with their own fun and creative ways to engage the entire school in this initiative. Suggestions include:

• Invite a guest reader(s)/local celebrity to read to your students.
• Choose a great storyteller from among your school staff (or students!) to read aloud during an assembly.
• DEAR - simply choose a time for the entire student population to Drop Everything And Read!

Whatever you decide to do, be sure to take photos and share them on your school's social media accounts (and please tag the library in your posts!).

Lastly, don't forget to report your reading to Red Deer Public Library! Tell us how many students and teachers read for at least 15 minutes. You can report this number using the web form on their website at rdpl.org (form will be available Jan. 26 and 27), giving them a call at 403-346-4576, or stopping by any library branch in person.
