Expand Image

Today is the Feast Day of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys.

Born in France, St. Marguerite was invited to set up a convent in New France by the governor of Montreal. There she founded the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal, which provided education for young girls, the poor, and children of First Nations.

Declared "venerable" in 1878, St. Marguerite Bourgeoys became the first female saint of Canada in 1982 when she was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
